Un álbum: Sola en la sala, de Eskarnia

Eskarnia es una cantante y artista multidisciplinar residente en Málaga (España). En su primer álbum, Sola en sala, rindió homenaje a la poeta Gloria Fuertes (Madrid, 1917-1998)  en el centenario de su nacimiento. El álbum está compuesto por 9 temas, inspirados en la poesía más desconocida de la escritora madrileña. Eskarnia seleccionó versos de Gloria Fuertes y alrededor de ellos escribió los temas de este album, creando una amalgama entre sus rimas y las de Gloria Fuertes. Esta unión está muy presente en la pista homónima Sola en la sala. En esta canción podemos escuchar fragmentos de los poemas Y no sé por qué y En las noches claras de Gloria Fuertes, e incluso podemos oír la voz de la poeta en ciertos momentos.

En el álbum, Eskarnia habla de sus experiencias y sus deseos, pero también habla de los problemas sociales que España vive desde la crisis del 2008. Sus letras son socialmente reivindicativas y claramente manifiesta su desacuerdo con el gobierno actual y la estructura de poder del país.

Las bases rítmicas son de Liibe, el hermano pequeño de Eskarnia, con colaboración de los artistas Daniel Hidalgo, Las flores no lloran y Tiritando.

Me gustaría también recomendar la poesía de Gloria Fuertes, una mujer fuerte y diferente que se enfrentó a un mundo intolerante. Si están interesados en su poesía, recuerden buscar sus poemas para adultos (Gloria Fuertes es más conocida por sus poemas infantiles). Aquí les dejo uno de mis favoritos:

An album: Sola en la sala, by Eskarnia

Eskarnia is a singer and multidisciplinary artist from Malaga (Spain). In her debut album, Sola en la sala (Alone in the Room), she created a centennial rendition honoring the birth of the poet Gloria Fuertes (Madrid, 1917-1998). The album is comprised of nine tracks inspired by some of the most unknown poems of this female writer from Madrid. Eskarnia selected verses of Fuertes and wove the album’s songs around them, creating an amalgamation of her own rhymes and those of Gloria Fuertes. The union is foremost in the homonymous track, Sola en la sala, in which we can hear fragments of the poem Y no sé por qué (And I Don’t Know Why) and En las noches claras (On Clear Nights), and even the voice of the poet at certain moments.

In the album, Eskarnia talks about her experiences and desires but also about social problems in Spain, particularly after the 2008 crisis. Her lyrics are social reclamations and clearly express her disagreement with the current government and power structure of the country.

The beats were created by Liibe, Eskarnia’s little brother, and feature collaborations by artists Daniel Hidalgo, Las flores no lloran, and Tiritando.

I would also like to recommend the poems of Gloria Fuertes, a unique and powerful woman who confronted an intolerant world. If you are interested in her poetry, remember to search for the adult works (she is more widely known for her childrens’ poetry). Here is one of my favorites:

TED en español

El 25 de abril fue el día elegido por TED para realizar su primera jornada de charlas en español. La temática central fue Conexión y sentido, y participaron 6 oradores: el artista Tomás Saraceno, el músico Jorge Drexler, la ex-candidata presidential Ingrid Betancourt, la primatóloga Isabel Behncke Izquierdo, la astrofísica Gabriela González y el periodista y presentador Jorge Ramos. Por el momento, en su web, solo está disponible la charla de Drexler, pero no dudamos que en un futuro cercano lo estarán todas.

La temática y la selección de los ponentes no podría ser más interesante. Es un inicio fantástico para sus jornadas en español, las cuales esperamos que sigan desarrollándose a menudo, y agradecemos que se dé importancia a la lengua que tantas personas en el planeta utilizamos cada día.

TED in Spanish

April 25th was the day that TED chose to launch the first session of presentations in Spanish. The main theme was Connections and Meaning, and six speakers participated: the artist Tomás Saraceno, the musician Jorge Drexler, the presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, the primatologists Isabel Behncke Izquierdo, the astrophysicist Gabriela Gonzalez, and the journalist and anchor Jorge Ramos. So far, only Drexler’s speech is available on their website, but no doubt the rest will be available in the near future.

The focus and the speakers couldn’t have been more interesting and kicked off a fantastic starting point for their Spanish sessions, which, we hope, will continue developing. We’re thankful that TED is empowering the language that so may people in the planet use every day.

Una exposición: Wild Noise / Ruido Salvaje

La exposición se inauguró el 17 de febrero y permanecerá abierta hasta el 3 de julio. La exposición explora el arte contemporáneo cubano desde 1970 en adelante. Esta es una muestra de artistas cubanos, tanto residentes en la isla como residentes en el extranjero, que han experimentado problemas de identidad, comunidad, y experiencia urbana. En la exposición hay más de 60 trabajos hechos por más de 30 artistas. Muchos ellos se exhiben por primera vez.

Wild Noise / Ruido Salvaje fue organizada por Bronx Museum y Corina Matamoros y Aylet Ojeda Jequín, comisarios de arte contemporáneo en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (MNBA) en La Habana, y es parte de una larga colaboración entre el Bronx Museum y el MNBA.

El Bronx Museum está abierto de miércoles a domingo, y la entrada es gratuita.

An exhibition: Wild Noise / Ruido Salvaje

The exhibition opened on February 17, and will stay open until July 3. The exhibition explores the contemporary art of Cuba since 1970. It features works of Cuban artists from both the island and those living abroad, who have experienced problems of identity, community and urban experience. The exhibition has more than 60 works by more than 30 artists, many works exhibited for the first time.

Wild Noise / Ruido Salvaje was organized by the Bronx Museum and Corina Matamoros and Aylet Ojeda Jequín, curators of Havana’s National Museum of Fine Arts, and is part of a long collaboration between the Bronx Museum and Havana’s.

The Bronx Museum is open from Wednesdays through Sundays, and admission is free.
