“Me quedé con la miel en los labios.” (I was left with the honey on my lips).

We use it when we want to express that we have been really close to something really good, but at the end, we missed it.

You are a big fan of this Swedish black metal band called Hylla. They are comming to New York and you are super excited. You go to Terminal 5 to buy the tickets, and when it’s your turn they put a SOLD OUT sign and close the window. You say: “Damn it. I really wanted to see Hylla at Terminal 5, pero me quedé con la miel en los labios. I never thought black metal was that popular.”

You love this ice cream shop in Brooklyn. You go there on a Friday night and there is a huge line. You wait for 30 minutes, and when it’s your turn they tell you they are completely out of ice cream. You say: “Damn it! Me quedé con la miel en los labios.” Then you go home furious.
