La vida es sueño

Here is the poem that we currently have in the blackboard close to the North Room. It’s from La Vida es Sueño, a play that Calderón de la Barca published in 1635.

Yo sueño que estoy aquí
destas prisiones cargado,
y soñé que en otro estado
más lisonjero me vi.
¿Qué es la vida? Un frenesí.
¿Qué es la vida? Una ilusión,
una sombra, una ficción,
y el mayor bien es pequeño;
que toda la vida es sueño,
y los sueños, sueños son.

En inglés:

I dream that I am here
from these prisons loaded,
and I dreamt that in another
happier state I saw myself [in].
What is life? A frenzy.
What is life? An illusion.
A shadow, a fiction,
and the greatest good is [still] small;
for [the whole] life is a dream,
and dreams… are [just] dreams.
